Björnen Baloo hålls i en inhägnad som en turistattraktion i staden Straja i Rumänien. Här i Transsylvanska alperna lever han under svåra förhållanden – och World Animal Protection arbetar för att han ska få komma till det djurvänliga reservatet Libearty. Hjälp Baloo genom att mejla till den rumänska regeringen!

Dear Minister Buzoianu,

I am writing to express my deep concern about the situation of Baloo the bear, who is currently in private captivity in Straja, Hunedoara, and suffers from unsuitable living conditions.

Baloo is kept in complete social isolation from other bears, given an inappropriate diet, and shows signs of painful health problems without any apparent veterinary care. Keeping wild animals in captivity for entertainment is unacceptable, and not to provide them with the care they need is further appalling. Baloo is subjected to regular stress from tourists petting him and taking pictures, which poses a problem for public safety. A bear is a wild animal, not a tourist attraction. In addition to a lot of stress for the animals, close contact between wild animals and humans can also lead to the spread of diseases and stressed animals to attack and harm humans.

I ask for your intervention as soon as possible to ensure that Baloo is transferred to the Libearty bear sanctuary in Zărnești. There he can live in an environment that is natural to him, socialize with other bears and receive the food and care he needs from the organization Asociaţia Milioane de Prieteni (AMP), which manages the sanctuary. Over the past 20 years, Romania has made great progress in the field of animal welfare. Unfortunately, cruel, heartbreaking cases such as the Baloo captivity risk damaging Romania's reputation and tourism industry if they are not addressed.

As the minister responsible for animal welfare in Romania, you have the power to rectify this horrible situation. There is a strong opinion in favour of Baloo being allowed to get out of his captivity and move to Libearty. In 2023, World Animal Protection submitted a petition to the Romanian government with almost 180,000 signatures supporting an animal-friendly life for Baloo. In addition, 85 percent of respondents to a Romanian survey conducted in 2024 agreed that the most ethical and responsible approach is to move Baloo to a sanctuary, where he can live in an animal-friendly, natural environment.

I, along with many others, urge you to take strong action immediately. Give Baloo a dignified bear life – and improve thereby Romania's reputation as a country that takes care of its animals.
